The Gift of Compassion

This afternoon as we were doing the final session of GriefShare our group discussion went to the gift that grief, the loss of losing a loved one, has bestowed on all of us. The gift of compassion, a gift that none of us had expected or even wanted. So how is it that we received such a wonderful yet unwanted, considering the circumstances, gift?

Grief as described in the dictionary, is to experience intense sorrow especially after the loss of a loved one. If we look at this description it then stands to reason that only someone who has experienced a similar grief can come close to fully understanding your journey with grief. Those who have been exposed to grief will attest to the overwhelming pain, confusion and disruption that takes place.

Grief is the tough part, you need to journey with it, you need to look it in the face, you need to feel it and most of all you need to accept its presence, it is then that you are blessed with the gift of compassion. The gift of meeting others in a similar situation and without a word being said you can relate and comfort in a authentic knowing manner.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

Embrace the grief, embrace the gift.
